Lesson Plan #1

Jordan Hoffman

First Grade Lesson Plan- FISHES

Project Description:
Students will explore and observe the outside of a dead fish with their hands. They will observe what makes a fish a fish exploring gills, skin, and eyes. Students will also explore using different colors, gems, glitter, and different textures for their fish. Split the children up into groups and let them work together to see what textures they can make using different materials on their fish.

Materials Needed:
Pastels
Oils
Chalk
Markers
Glitter
Paper
Glue
Gloves
Fish

Objectives

  • ·  Students will learn about correct anatomy of a fish exploring gills, skin, eyes, etc.

  • ·  Students will work collaboratively in groups and explore the fish in front of them.

  • ·  Each group will make their own fish adding different materials to give their fishes unique texture.

Visual Arts Standards Addressed

  • ·  Creating: Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
  •    Creating: Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.
  •    Responding: Classify artwork based on texture of the fish.

Other Standards Addressed

·      Objective 3- Develop and use skills to communicate ideas, information, and feelings.

o   Recognize and express feelings in a variety of ways (e.g., draw, paint, tell stories, dance, sing).

Vocabulary
·      Fish- type of underwater breathing animal.
·      Gills- how fish breath underwater.
·      Texture- the visual and especially tactile quality of a surface.
·      Mixed Media- an artwork in which more than one type of art material is used.
·      Negative Space- Shapes or spaces that are or represent the area unoccupied by objects.

Pedagogy
  •   Before class I am going to prepare all of the supplies needed on a back table where they will meet after discussion.
  • ·  I will have students meet me on a different table to go over what we are going to do with the dead fish.
  • ·  I will talk to them about sanitizing. By showing how take put gloves on and off and to wash hands after gloves are off.
  • ·  We will then talk about the anatomy of a fish. How can they breathe underwater and how do they swim? What physical aspects can you see?
  • ·  After discussion I will take students to the table where I will split them up in groups and give them a fish on a big plastic bag where they can touch the fish but not pick up. (Too young)
  • ·  After exploration and clean up, we will talk about texture and what that means in an art aspect as well as a fish aspect.
  • ·  I will then give instructions by demonstrating with the fish, that if it is laying on its side it will only have one eye. And that the rest of its body, including the fins, are textured with different things.
  • ·  Students will then go to with that same group to the table where a big piece of paper will be laying for them to make their own fish.
  • ·  Now it’s time to start our fishes. Students will draw the outline of their fish and get started using the different art supplies. Make sure each student uses at least two different supplies (markers/oil)
  • ·  Once fish are drawn they can color them with different art supplies.
  • ·  Once fish are colored they can add their texture with the different materials. glitter, jewels, etc.
  • ·  Once all the students have finished we will meet on the mats and discuss what we learned and the process we used to make our fish and background.

Assessment
After everyone is done, have the students walk around and observe their classmates work.

·     After observing their classmates artwork, as a class talk about the things they see.
o   How are they different?
o   How are they similar?
o   What do you like?
o   What did you learn about fish?
o   What did you learn about the art supplies you used?

·    How does your work portray what you saw on the fish?

Light Painting

 Rings of Fire

Mickey Fire

Split-Splat

The light painting was my absolute favorite. I got the inspiration from one of the girls in our class. She wrote down specific instructions to get me started. I got my whole family together. We went to the store and bought whisks, yarn, and steel wool to start the process. We then put the steel wool inside the whisk. We tied the yarn around the whisk then dipped it in lighter fluid, lit it up, and made cool designs. It took us a while to figure out how to light the steel wool. We finally dipped it in my dad's gas can and just went crazy in the streets. What I learned from this experience is that art is really fun to do with a group where you can just have fun and get crazy. I also learned that it is very important to have a good camera! The pictures turn out so much better that way. It turned out better than expected! I had so much fun I wouldn't change anything about it. The Mickey one was tricky we actually used photo shop to change it up. Which I thought I don't know if that's allowed but then I thought well that would be a good assignment for a gifted student especially one that loves taking pictures just to get familiar and experiment with a different process to create other things. But we made one big circle with the fire then we made a little circle and through photo shop we were able to take the little circle and reflect it onto the other side of the main head. We then changed the color and it just turned out so cool! This one was just so fun and it turned out amazing! This was by far my favorite assignment.

Printmaking x 2

Lemon Delight

Squares of Wonder

I thought this was a really fun assignment. I got my inspiration off of Pinterest just like everything else I have done. For my top print making I used a lemon and a small box lid case for the stamp. The lemons didn't work as well as I was hoping. I thought it would just be the most brilliant idea and it didn't show up as well as I would have liked. I was just going to use the lemon but it felt a little empty so I decided to add on the squares over it to create a geometric feel. For the second picture I used a small box and wrapped yarn around it and then dipped it in paint, then onto the paper. They turned out really cool. The square one turned out as aspected. I wish i wouldn't have done the top squares or changed the color. If I was to do it again I would do that differently. I would also like to experiment with even more techniques. I tried the potato but that didn't work very well. But i'm sure there are a lot of different ways you could go about doing this. It was fun to experiment with different materials.

Alien Name's

Alien Jordan

I made like five different Alien name backgrounds. But this one was my favorite. In the other ones I forgot to keep in mind the assignment of foreground, middle-ground, and background. This was a hard assignment but only because it was hard to keep everything proportional with such a big alien. I wanted striped fluffy trees, so i drew my trees and hot-glued fluff balls to the top of the trees. I found some sparkles that I thought would be so cute as sparkle hills. I really got to explore with different textures for my alien. I added googly eyes and sparkles to make him look cute and add a little extra to his body. I think it turned out really well. I think I still needed to work on my foreground, middle-ground, and background but I think it looks really cute. I like that you get to have your name as the alien it makes it unique to just you. This was a really fun assignment.

100 Color Challenge

Color Mixing

This was a really hard assignment. I originally wanted to keep it organized by colors but soon realized that I was running out of color options. I started skipping around after the first two lines. I just kept mixing till all my colors were used. It was really hard to keep track of the different colors I used too. It turned out okay I wish I would have stayed organized and the squares were bigger. I learned that I could actually come up with 100 colors which I wasn't sure if that was going to happen. It was a lot of fun mixing the colors and I learned how to make so many colors I didn't know how before just by accident.

Cardboard Construction

Ahoy-Matey

When I first started this project, I tried to make an abstract piece. It looked really cool but I needed a solid ground and background. In our tiny apartment it was too hard to find a spot for it and you couldn't move it or it would fall apart. This is on our washer in the bathroom. That is where I came up with a ship idea. I spray painted it and didn't want it to be completely black because I wanted it to look more torn. It was a really simple outline but really fun. It turned out pretty good. I really liked it at the time but I wish I would have decorated the ship more maybe with a skull or things like that. I learned that you could make cool things just with little pieces of cardboard. I had an old box under my bed and just started cutting it and putting pieces together. This would be a cool project to have with a class. You could have them create anything.

Batik

Cattail Breeze

I think I struggled with this specific assignment. I searched and searched for permanent tempera paint then finally found some. Drawing my design on the fabric was easy. But outlining the drawing in glue was so hard. It was really runny and it took forever to dry. It tended to clump together a lot. That made it difficult because then I had to go over the lines again with glue. I didn't like this one at all. I might have been doing it wrong but I did it exactly as the video instructed. Once I washed it out it started taking my color which was weird because I made sure I had permanent paint. But you can at least see my lines on the cattails. I this was my newer one. But I would like to do it again but I would definitely research it to make sure I was doing it right. But overall this was probably my least favorite assignment. The top picture is when the glue and paint dried. The bottom picture is when I used water to wash out the glue.
